Transforming Ground Uncertainties into Solid Foundations

Meet Matthew Church, PE Geographic Discipline Leader | Geotechnical
With over 17 years of progressive experience in geotechnical engineering and construction management, Matthew brings comprehensive expertise in delivering single- and multi-phase subsurface investigations and laboratory testing programs. His B.S. in Civil Engineering foundation has supported his extensive work across low- and high-rise buildings, commercial developments, residential subdivisions, and mixed-use facilities throughout the Mid-Atlantic region.
Matthew’s technical proficiency spans a complete spectrum of subsurface exploration methods, complemented by comprehensive laboratory testing programs. His specialized expertise includes foundation design and analysis for both shallow and deep systems, slope stability assessments, soil stabilization, retention structures, and karst terrain evaluations with both preventive and remedial solutions. His experience extends seamlessly into construction phases, encompassing soil and asphalt compaction testing, foundation construction observation, concrete and reinforcing steel inspections, masonry, structural steel, and retaining wall evaluations for premier national food chains, convenience/fueling stations, and large format store clients.
Matthew’s passion for geotechnical engineering was sparked during an engineering geology class in college, where he discovered the fascinating integration of earth sciences with engineering across varying geologies. “I find it most rewarding to develop practical, cost-effective solutions for challenging site conditions,” said Matthew. “Every site has its own unique geologic and soil characteristics, and I enjoy the process of turning those unknowns into a safe and buildable design.” His recent work on a challenging large format store project in Mechanicsburg, PA exemplifies this approach—navigating complex karst geology with numerous sinkholes through comprehensive geotechnical and geophysical investigations, developing and monitoring a proof grouting plan to stabilize karst features while overseeing earthwork during site development. “It’s especially fulfilling to know that the work I do not only solves immediate construction challenges but also helps create long-term, resilient infrastructure that communities rely on every day.”
