Rebuilding Critical Infrastructure Without Slowing the Corridor

Keeping traffic moving along one of Maine’s most vital transportation corridors required a carefully coordinated approach to bridge rehabilitation. Across multiple structures on and over I-95, our team delivered a program of deck replacements and structural improvements designed to extend service life, improve ride quality, and modernize key components while maintaining traffic flow.

Working within tight construction windows and active roadway conditions, the effort balanced construction efficiency with the need to minimize disruption to daily travel.

Modernizing Bridges Across the System

At the Penobscot River near Mile 244, full deck replacement was completed on the 1,055-foot Vaughn Daggett Memorial Bridges in both directions. These historic multi-span plate-girder structures were upgraded with precast deck panels, cast-in-place concrete topping, waterproofing membranes, and new asphalt wearing surfaces. Finger-joint expansion joints were installed to restore movement capacity and reduce long-term maintenance needs.

Additional work south of the river included deck replacement and cast-in-place construction over Route 116, along with bearing replacements using elastomeric units. The Route 157 bridge over I-95 received precast deck panels, reinforced concrete topping, waterproofing, and new asphalt, along with compression joints, diaphragm replacement, and targeted structural repairs.

Delivering a Coordinated Program of Improvements

The broader scope also included the Kennebunk and Arundel Days Mill Bridge Replacement, supported by roadway paving, earthwork, drainage and utility upgrades, guardrail installation, riprap, erosion control, striping, and traffic control.

Through coordinated design and construction, the program strengthened multiple crossings along the corridor, improving safety, durability, and performance while keeping one of Maine’s most important highways moving.
