Bloomfield Train Station Adaptive Traffic Signal
Bloomfield Township, Essex County, NJProvided transportation design services for improvements to the intersection of Glenwood Avenue and Lackawanna Place/Conger Street near the Bloomfield Train Station. Due to the heavy volumes and varying peak periods contingent on train schedules, an adaptive traffic signal system is being installed to dynamically change traffic signal timing directives and phasing based on real-time traffic volumes. In addition to the traffic signal improvements, the project also included various streetscape elements including decorative paving and street furniture.
A significant effort was also spent improving the bicycle and pedestrian facilities, including installation of additional sidewalk to provide connectivity to the train station, new ADA-compliant curb ramps, and a dedicated bicycle lane. Services included traffic planning and analysis, traffic signal design, highway lighting design, adaptive traffic signal system design, ADA curb ramp design, intersection lighting, bike lane design, streetscape design, and mill/overlay. It should also be noted that this is the first signal that will ultimately be added to a corridor of adaptive traffic signals based on future upgrades currently under design.
