Rabkin Park Field Improvements

Union, NJ

Rabkin Park, jointly owned by the Township of Union and the Union Township Board of Education, has long been a vital sports venue for local teams. The park’s multipurpose fields have served the high school’s junior varsity soccer, freshman football, JV baseball, JV softball, and field hockey teams, as well as the local Pop Warner football team.

Over the years, inclement weather had taken its toll, rendering the fields run-down and potentially hazardous for players. Recognizing this, the Township and Board of Education initiated a comprehensive redesign project. The primary objective was to transform Rabkin Park into a central hub for both sports and recreation while preserving its role in hosting numerous special events. Maintaining the park’s community-centric character alongside modern infrastructure improvements was paramount, given its geographical significance at the heart of the town.

The appointed municipal engineers, under the leadership of Township Engineer Joe Venezia, reimagined the field layout. Their innovative design incorporated a full-length field that could be subdivided into smaller sections for various events, maximizing versatility. Acknowledging the park’s importance to Township residents and the general public, the revitalization project was strategically phased to ensure continuous access throughout the renovation process.

Completing the multipurpose field marks a significant milestone in Rabkin Park’s transformation. This achievement sets the stage for further enhancements, with plans already in motion for upgrading the tennis courts.
