Lomma Trucking Cell Tower

Town of Kearny, Hudson County, NJ

Provided design services for a new 150 ft monopole with ground disturbance and flood elevation restrictions, to be installed in Kearny, NJ in the busy trucking yard of Lomma Trucking. The lead carrier required a cell tower close to the Pulaski Skyway corridor near the New Jersey Turnpike connector, with a necessary antenna height of 150 ft, in order to clear the bridge. The major challenges included obtaining zoning approval for construction of a new monopole that could not be installed via conventional methods due to constraints on the site.  We worked with CellBlocks to design a precast post tensioned foundation that satisfied the design criteria. In addition, the foundation was installed in one day.

Our professionals determined the flood hazard elevation for the foundation top surface and coordinated and obtained NJDEP approvals. The design includes the support of a 28 ft equipment shelter with back-up generator, and steel stairs and access platforms cantilevered off the foundation, all without ground disturbance. The cell site is situated in a low lying peninsula surrounded by the winding Passaic River. The foundation is located near the property line, and the parking lot frequently floods during heavy rains. To achieve the necessary elevation for the top of the precast foundation and prevent wash-out of the granular base, a structural wood retaining wall was designed for the compacted foundation subgrade. The retaining wall design utilizes the weight of the precast foundation to provide lateral support for the wall to protect the long term integrity of the compacted material supporting the foundation.
