Village of East Aurora – New Fire Station

East Aurora, NY

Fire Station

Where First Response Meets Thoughtful Design
The Village of East Aurora needed a new fire station that could serve the community for decades to come. Following a programming study conducted with the fire department, our firm provided full-service design and engineering for a 22,800 sq. ft. facility built to meet that need. The effort began with a feasibility analysis of multiple potential sites and culminated in the selection of a prominent location at the gateway to a long-established residential neighborhood, directly across from a church listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Public presentations played a key role in building consensus around the site and design. To ensure contextual sensitivity, the final building uses materials reminiscent of the historic church’s limestone along with roof forms that reflect the character of surrounding homes.
Smarter Systems, Smaller Footprint
The facility was designed with both operational efficiency and environmental responsibility in mind. Clerestory windows in the apparatus bays bring in generous natural light, often eliminating the need for artificial lighting during the day. Permeable asphalt paving in the parking area supports on-site stormwater management without requiring a detention pond. Inside, the layout reflects input gathered during the programming phase, with a corner-positioned radio room strategically placed to maintain clear visibility of the apparatus apron, entry walk, and parking areas, ensuring safe operations for staff and visitors alike.
The completed facility achieved LEED Silver certification and was honored in 2018 with an AIA Rochester Region Design Award for its thoughtful integration of function, form, and community context.
