Sea Watch Oceanfront Building

Manasquan, NJ

Winner of an NJSME Project of the Year Award

In October 2012, Hurricane Sandy severely damaged Manasquan Borough’s Sea Watch Oceanfront Building, a popular multi-purpose building located on the beachfront.  To help revitalize this beloved stretch of the Jersey Shore, our team was tasked with providing comprehensive engineering, permitting, and grants/funding services for this FEMA-funded restoration project.  Our initial challenges involved securing support and approval from the NJDEP CAFRA Division and NJDEP Green Acres Program.

Work began with the development of design and construction documents for a new, elevated 2,000-square-foot structure. Our team crafted a FEMA-compliant conceptual layout that received approval from Manasquan Borough, setting the stage for the new construction. The reimagined facility features a public dining area, quick-serve take-out concession, sundries store, ground-level storage, seasonal lockers, and 1,500 sq. ft. of exterior deck space, all designed to enhance the visitor experience.

Accessibility and sustainability were critical considerations for the Borough. An ADA-compliant parking lot was constructed, and the site was reconfigured to include a pedestrian and cyclist-friendly plaza. The addition of a bicycle lot with a capacity for over 100 bikes not only promotes eco-friendly transportation but also renews a sense of vibrancy and activity in the area.

This project exemplifies how coastal communities can adapt and thrive in the face of environmental challenges. The new Sea Watch Oceanfront Building stands as a testament to resilient design, surpassing its predecessor in both durability and functionality. It offers a revitalized community space that welcomes residents and visitors alike, embodying Manasquan Borough’s commitment to rebuilding stronger and smarter.
