NMDOT US 82/NM 83 ADA Improvement Project

City of Lovington, Lea County, NM

As part of the ongoing New Mexico Department of Transportation Road Construction Project, Colliers Engineering & Design provided mapping services for the City of Lovington for ADA and driveway turnout improvements. The majority of existing pedestrian ramps and sidewalks in the City were not in compliance with current ADA requirements. Our services involved design-grade mobile LiDAR scanning of 1.2 miles of US 82/NM 83 and topographic/planimetric mapping from LiDAR point cloud to generate a location survey base map.

This was one of the first ADA improvement projects mapped with mobile LiDAR in New Mexico. The mapping enabled the engineers to develop a design that will allow pedestrians, including those with disabilities, to access the businesses and residences via public sidewalks, pedestrian ramps, and crosswalks within project limits. Additionally, the mobile LiDAR data set and comprehensive mapping were useful for identifying right-of-way encroachments and determining if existing traffic signs met the minimum height clearance requirements.
