New Gated Dam on Monongahela River

Braddock, PA

Our team of professionals designed a new Tainter-gated dam on the Monongahela River using an innovative “in-the-wet” approach. The project involved implementing two large precast float-in segments for the dam’s base. Additionally, our team extensively used precast elements fabricated at an offsite casting facility, which helped streamline the construction process and ensure that the highest-quality materials were utilized.

The construction process also included deep concrete drilled shaft foundations, sheet pile cut-off walls with H-piles and pipe piles, dredging, underwater work, tremie concrete placements, and mooring systems. Despite the project’s complexity, our team was able to complete the construction without using cofferdams. As a result, the lock structures were successfully resurfaced, and the dam has been modernized to meet the expected influx of rainwater and runoff.
