Farm Lane Road & Rail Grade Separation

East Lansing, MI

A two-lane roadway with two separate at-grade railroad crossings on the campus of Michigan State University.

This Farm Lane Grade Separation and roadway project extends from Mt. Hope Road northerly to Wilson Road and is located on the campus of Michigan State University (MSU), in the City of East Lansing and Ingham County. The overall project length is approximately 0.8 miles. Farm Lane within the proposed project limits is an existing two-lane roadway with two separate at-grade railroad crossings at the CSX and CN rail lines and is classified as a Local Urban Collector Route. The existing at-grade rail crossings create serious conflicts with emergency services and with University traffic flow resulting in operational, accessibility, safety, and time issues. Vehicle conflicts with bicycles and pedestrians also existed along this corridor.

This project widened Farm Lane and will improve safety, help manage motorized and non-motorized traffic more effectively, give a high priority to pedestrians, and enhance the overall quality of life on the MSU campus consistent with the University’s 2020 Plan. The success of this project was dependent on our understanding of the project specific goals and objectives and in translating this understanding into an engineering design which is technically sound, safe, on-time and within budget.
