Farm Lane Road & Rail Grade Separation

East Lansing, MI

Conversion of  two-lane roadway with two separate at-grade railroad crossings to a four-lane boulevard section with grade separated crossings on the campus of Michigan State University.

This Farm Lane Grade Separation and roadway project extended from Mt. Hope Road northerly to Wilson Road and is located on the campus of Michigan State University (MSU), in the City of East Lansing and Ingham County. The overall project length is approximately 0.8 miles. Farm Lane, within the proposed project limits, was a two-lane roadway (Local Urban Collector) with two separate at-grade railroad crossings at the CSX and CN rail lines. The existing at-grade rail crossings created serious conflicts with emergency services and with University traffic flow resulting in operational, accessibility, safety, and time issues. Vehicle conflicts with bicycles and pedestrians also existed along this corridor.

This project widened Farm Lane and improved safety, helped manage motorized and non-motorized traffic more effectively, gave a high priority to pedestrians, and enhanced the overall quality of life on the MSU campus consistent with the University’s 2020 Plan. The success of this project was dependent on our understanding of the project specific goals and objectives and in translating this understanding into an engineering design that was technically sound, safe, on-time and within budget.
