Columbus Drive Swing Bridge Coatings

Tampa, FL

Colliers Engineering & Design provided inspection of the Columbus Drive Swing Bridge’s hazardous paint removal, containment, and protective coating application. The importance of hazardous waste monitoring was emphasized during the project due to the bridge crossing over the Hillsborough River.

Built in 1926, the Columbus Drive Bridge was granted historic designation in 2006. The 103-foot bobtail swing main span rotates on a turntable and pivot to swing horizontally, parallel with the waterway channel, allowing tall boats to pass without obstruction. The project’s major work included complete blast and paint, replacement of the bridge’s mechanical elements and electric control system, roadway and deck grating, as well as structural repairs to the steel and concrete, and renovations to the bridge tender house.
