Canopy by Hilton, New Orleans Downtown
New Orleans, LAOur professionals provided architectural services for the newest Canopy by Hilton hotel, located in the heart of downtown New Orleans.
The grand opening in April marked the culmination of seven years of careful planning and design for this challenging adaptive reuse project.
The 176-room, 14-story hotel occupies the 1959-built former Oil and Gas Building and was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2014. The original cast-in-place concrete structure was designed in the International Style by August Perez & Associates and Edward B. Silverstein & Associates. Our professionals provided full service conceptual design and layouts for the new interior within the historic building shell. Our team worked closely with historic consultants and specialty contractors to ensure design solutions met State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) requirements.
The entire façade was replaced with a designed to provide an in-kind replacement to the original aluminum and glass curtain system. Deteriorated marble panels were replaced with stone cut from the same quarry originally used 60-years prior. The antiquated exterior enclosure was replaced with high-tech, modern solution that was required to meet the rigorous standards of the current building code, replicate the proportions of the historic fabric and provide weather resilience in a hurricane prone location. Having sat vacant for nearly a decade due to flood damage from Hurricane Katrina, the building required an increased level of cleaning and de-staining throughout. Careful consideration was provided to the historic lobby’s marble walls and original terrazzo flooring, all retained as part of SHPO requirements. To complete the design, a new 4,200 SF street-level restaurant was constructed as an expansion space into an adjacent historic single-story structure.
The completed hotel and restaurant and bar pay tribute to New Orleans’ rich history, energy and culture. Canopy is a new Lifestyle brand that was developed by Hilton to accommodate the needs of the contemporary leisure and business traveler. The key element of the brand is to celebrate the unique components of the region in which they are located. This is the second Canopy by Hilton hotel completed by Colliers through the relationship with Baywood Hotels and NewcrestImage.
