BBB Superstructure Replacement
Burlington, NJThe Burlington County Bridge Commission initiated an S-Span replacement project on the New Jersey approach to the Burlington-Bristol Bridge, requiring professional engineering and construction administration services. The project included replacing the existing deck and sidewalk with precast lightweight concrete-filled steel grid panels, upgrading the bridge barrier to the NJDOT Standard 4-Bar Open Steel Parapet, and installing a new welded steel plate curb. The structural enhancements also involved replacing crossbeams and stringers with modern steel components.
The 500-foot structure underwent additional improvements, including the installation of a waterproof asphalt-wearing surface, updated pavement markings, new downspouts, and significant repairs to various structural elements such as expansion joints, joint headers, and bent columns. Retained steel members were cleaned and painted to extend their lifespan.
Pre-fabricated grid deck panels were assembled on-site, alongside new crossbeams, with strategic construction staging ensuring enhanced safety, cost efficiency, and timely completion. The result is a stronger, more modern bridge that meets the needs of both vehicular and pedestrian traffic.
