Arlington National Cemetery Pylon Stabilization

Arlington, VA

The Women in the Military Memorial Pylon Stabilization project was undertaken to address the leaning of three pylons along Memorial Avenue at Arlington National Cemetery. The project involved designing and installing resistance piers and helical piles to secure the foundations of these significant monuments. As a design-build project, it brought together multiple disciplines to overcome complex geotechnical challenges. Terra Constructs contracted our firm to provide essential services such as geotechnical analysis, surveying, subsurface utility engineering, construction observation, and historic preservation.

The engineering team faced various technical and logistical challenges throughout the project. The pylons’ unique design and the need for specialized stabilization techniques required innovative solutions and precise execution. At the same time, maintaining the integrity of the historical site was paramount, demanding that the work be carried out with the utmost sensitivity and respect for the surroundings.

Given that daily funeral and memorial services continued at Arlington National Cemetery, the project required meticulous planning and coordination to avoid any disruption to these ceremonies. Through a balanced approach that integrated modern engineering methods with a deep commitment to preservation, the project successfully restored the structural integrity of the memorial pylons while safeguarding the sanctity of one of the nation’s most revered sites. This collaboration set a high standard for future projects in similarly challenging and sensitive environments.
