Allen Creek Railroad Berm & Pedestrian Access

Ann Arbor, MIDecreasing flooding of developed areas in Ann Arbor through Rapid Construction.
Colliers Engineering & Design provided Design-Build services for construction of a new culvert through an existing railroad berm to alleviate flooding issues in this heavily developed area of Ann Arbor, MI. The project is located along the Michigan Line which was purchased by MDOT and is operated and maintained by Amtrak.
Rapid construction methods were investigated for the rail crossing to minimize impacts to rail operations with the ultimate solution being a 24-hour shut down to construct the new culvert with a ‘cut and cover’. The project also includes construction of a box culvert for pedestrian access under the railroad at the same location as well as construction of a pedestrian bridge over Allen Creek adjacent to the Michigan Line crossing. The pedestrian improvements ultimately provide access to the adjacent trail system along the Huron River and the planned development of an old power plant site.
