Fleet electrification is reshaping how goods move across the country, and the infrastructure to support it is still being invented. When Voltera, a leader in EV infrastructure, decided to build their first-ever fleet charging station, they needed a design partner who could help define what that facility looks like from the ground up. There were no templates to follow. The project required fresh thinking about how operations, maintenance, and energy generation come together on a single site purpose-built for commercial freight vehicles.
Designing a New Facility Type
Our team designed two standalone buildings tailored to Voltera’s operational needs. The first houses dedicated office space for the operations team managing the site. The second is a full-service maintenance facility built specifically for freight vehicles, giving Voltera the capacity to keep its fleet running without relying on third-party service providers. The two buildings work together as a coordinated campus, with adjacencies and circulation designed around the daily realities of fleet operations.
Energy Generation Built Into the Site
Connecting the campus is a strategically designed fleet charging canopy equipped with photovoltaic panels, integrating renewable energy generation directly into the charging infrastructure. The canopy does double duty, protecting vehicles during charging while offsetting energy demand from the grid. It is the kind of design decision that only makes sense when the architecture and the energy strategy are developed together from the start. The completed facility gives Voltera a first-of-its-kind asset, a charging station that is not just functional but forward-looking, built for the scale and pace of commercial fleet electrification and designed to serve as a model for future locations as the company grows its national footprint.
