Subsurface Intelligence for Statewide Infrastructure
Accurate subsurface data is the difference between a project that runs smoothly and one that doesn’t. Unexpected utility conflicts during construction can lead to costly relocations, project delays, and safety hazards. For a statewide transportation program like CDOT’s, having reliable information about what’s underground before design decisions are made is critical to keeping projects on schedule, on budget, and out of harm’s way.
That’s the role Subsurface Utility Engineering plays. SUE combines civil engineering, surveying, and geophysics to identify and map underground utilities at varying quality levels, giving project teams the data they need to design around conflicts rather than discover them during construction. It’s the kind of work that stays invisible when it’s done right, and that’s exactly the point.
Our Role on the Ground
Our team is serving as a subconsultant providing Subsurface Utility Engineering and survey support services to Lamb-Star Engineering and Triunity for the statewide, all-region CDOT SUE NPS on-call contract. The scope includes SUE Quality Levels D through A performed in accordance with ASCE 38-22 and ASCE 75-22, ensuring reliable, standardized subsurface utility data for CDOT’s planning and design needs. All services are executed under the oversight of our local SUE Professional Engineer, with leadership from our SUE Manager and SUE Supervisor, and supported by UESI-certified BAMI staff and trained Vacuum Excavator Operators.
Field operations are deployed from our Englewood office using two vacuum excavation trucks, experienced technicians, full electromagnetic designating capabilities, and advanced survey instrumentation. This integrated SUE-survey approach allows our personnel to efficiently collect designation and test hole data while maintaining precise coordination with CDOT and the prime consultant teams.
