A Destination Brewery in the Shadow of Fenway’s Green Monster
Located at 1 David Ortiz Drive, just one block from the iconic Fenway Park, the Mighty Squirrel brewery and taproom occupies a highly visible site at the intersection of Boston’s sports culture and craft brewing scene. Designed as both a neighborhood gathering place and a destination for visiting fans, the project was envisioned to capture the energy of Fenway while offering a warm, welcoming environment that invites people to linger before and after the game.
The two-story, 13,000-square-foot venue includes four distinct bars, private event spaces, and a variety of seating experiences that support everything from casual visits to large celebrations. In addition to a full production brewery, the space accommodates beer, hard seltzer, and hard smoothie production alongside a full-service kitchen. Building on the design language established at Mighty Squirrel’s Waltham location, the Fenway taproom reinforces the brand’s identity while deepening the connection between patrons and the brewing process itself.
Design Shaped by Brewing, Brand, and Constraints
A central goal of the design was to make brewing visible and experiential. Elevated features such as The Brew Deck and The Overlook allow guests to observe brewing operations from multiple vantage points, transforming the production process into a defining architectural element rather than something hidden behind walls. This transparency reinforces the brewery’s craft-focused ethos and creates a dynamic, layered interior experience.
The project also required careful navigation of existing building conditions and immovable utilities. One of the most significant challenges, a large circular wall on the second floor, was transformed into an intentional design feature that conceals major ductwork while shaping the downstairs bar and guiding the layout of the second floor and mezzanine. These constraints ultimately informed a more efficient use of space and contributed to the venue’s distinctive character.
The completed brewery balances function, comfort, and identity, resulting in a relaxed yet energetic atmosphere that feels authentic to both Mighty Squirrel and Fenway. More than just a taproom, the project adds a vibrant new gathering place to the neighborhood that brings people together around craft beer, shared experiences, and the unmistakable spirit of Boston.
