Investing in the Future through the STEAM Ahead Program
Colliers Engineering & Design is committed to fostering innovation and nurturing the next generation of professionals. This summer, we are proud to have nine talented interns participating in Michigan Economic Development Corporation’s (MEDC) newly rebranded STEAM Ahead program. This initiative, which integrates arts with traditional STEM fields, is designed to provide college students with invaluable real-world experience and promote long-term career development.
The STEAM Ahead program represents a significant evolution from the previous STEM Forward initiative. By incorporating roles at the intersection of arts and science, technology, engineering, and math, such as front-end web developers and industrial designers, the program is more inclusive and aligned with the diverse needs of today’s industries. Additionally, MEDC has increased its wage match support to $4,000 for full-time interns and $2,000 for part-timers, making it more feasible for businesses to participate and support their interns.
“Programs like STEAM Ahead are invaluable for both Colliers Engineering & Design and the broader industry,” shared Rick Chelotti, PE, Division Director, Infrastructure, Colliers Engineering & Design, highlighting the program’s impact. “The support from MEDC allows us to attract and nurture talented interns who bring fresh perspectives and creative solutions. This initiative strengthens our immediate project teams and helps build a strong pipeline of future leaders.”
With the transition to STEAM Ahead, MEDC aims to increase participation among both students and employers. The expanded program now allows current college students from any Michigan school, Michiganders attending school out of state, and recent graduates to participate. This flexibility ensures a wider range of talented individuals can benefit from the program, gaining hands-on experience in their respective fields.
As Colliers Engineering & Design continues to support and engage with initiatives like STEAM Ahead, we remain dedicated to developing and retaining top talent within Michigan. Our involvement in this program not only contributes to our projects’ success but also plays a crucial role in shaping the future of the engineering and design industry.
Stay tuned for more updates on the changes and enhancements to the STEAM Ahead program and how they will further benefit our interns and the broader community.
