Comprehensive assessment, design and rehabilitation of the Red House Lake Dam and Bridge in Cattaraugus County, NY.
The Red House Lake Dam located in Allegany State Park in the Town of Red House, Cattaraugus County, NY. The dam and arched bridge was built across Red House Brook in 1929 to create a recreational lake for the park. The dam has a Hazard Classification of B (Intermediate Hazard dam). We were contracted by NYS Office of Parks Recreations and Historic Preservations (NYS OPRHP) to perform a comprehensive inspection and assessment of the dam and bridge structure. This included development of a full Engineering Assessment (EA), gauging the performance and condition of the dam. As part of the EA, the earthen dam and concrete spillway (with integrated arch bridge structure) were evaluated using field inspections and stability assessments. A hydrologic and hydraulic evaluation of the dam used inundation mapping to outline downstream impacts. A load rating and condition assessment for the three-span arch bridge was also conducted.
Our team provided NYS OPRHP a report outlining the findings of the EA, identifying areas recommended for dam safety compliance improvements and investigating bridge repair/replacement options. Final design included dam stability improvements (e.g. rock anchors), low-level-outlet improvements, bridge superstructure replacement, concrete repair, tree removals, embankment stabilization measures and other miscellaneous site improvements. We subsequently provided construction administration and inspection services to complete the structure’s rehabilitation.
