I-75 University Drive DDI

Auburn Hills, MI

Our firm designed Michigan’s first Diverging Diamond Interchange (DDI), a landmark structure spanning I-75 in Auburn Hills. The innovative two-span bridge features prestressed concrete bulb-tee girders supported by integral abutments behind MSE walls and a cap-and-column pier in the median. As part of an advanced Design-Build project, the team proposed an Alternative Technical Concept that realigned the interchange and University Drive, reducing the skew angle with I-75 from 45 to 25 degrees. This strategic adjustment simplified construction and shortened the bridge by 90 feet, yielding over $1 million in bid savings.

The design seamlessly integrates functionality with civic pride through thoughtful aesthetic elements. Decorative features include an ornamental steel fence, a prominent Auburn Hills city sign, and distinctive lighting along the fascias and bridge barriers. A center sidewalk, protected by safety barriers, accommodates pedestrians, while the design incorporates provisions for a future northbound I-75 ramp lane. The result is more than just an efficient traffic solution – it’s a distinctive gateway that reflects Auburn Hills’ identity while serving as a model for innovative interchange design.
