This multi-phase, high-profile community project aims to develop a network of interconnected on- and off-road bicycle routes across four municipalities.

Colliers Engineering & Design served as the Prime Consultant, performing an in-depth study to prioritize a bicycle network in Eastern Delaware County (DelCo), Pennsylvania. This multi-phase, high-profile community project aims to develop a network of interconnected on- and off-road bicycle routes across four municipalities. The resulting network will connect residents to areas of interest, including City of Philadelphia’s bicycle system, schools, transit stations, recreational facilities, parks and businesses, through a system of high-quality, low-stress bike routes.

The study assessed bicycle routes, key destinations, and bicycle potential in the region. It included a screening process analyzing trip potential, roadway Level of Stress (LTS), public preferences, stakeholder input, and the physical condition of roadways. The result was a prioritized list of over 30 routes through the area, including cost estimates and detailed funding options.

The team worked closely with representatives from each municipality in conjunction with Delaware County, PennDOT, DVRPC, SEPTA, the Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia, and a variety of other groups to develop this comprehensive bicycle transportation framework.

The study was completed in March 2022. One project along Lansdowne Avenue was completed during the planning study and the municipalities are in the process of pursuing funding for construction for more routes. Some recommendations of the study will be incorporated into the upcoming TASA-funded Garrett Road Modernization Project (Phase 1) along Garrett Road in Upper Darby, on which Bergmann is also a consultant. Upper Darby Township was recently awarded a $520K grant from DVRPC for implementation of key improvements.
