Drexel University Kelly Hall Renovation
Philadelphia, PADrexel University Kelly Hall Renovation
Philadelphia, PAOur firm played a crucial role in the comprehensive renovation of Kelly Hall, a prominent student dormitory at Drexel University in Philadelphia, PA. This complex project involved revitalizing an iconic 11-story structure built in 1967 at the northeast corner of 34th and Race Streets.
The renovation encompassed the entire 12,000 square-foot building, including its basement, ground floor, ten levels of student housing totaling 200 dorm rooms, and rooftop penthouse. The project aimed to modernize the facility while preserving its distinctive features.
Our team provided geotechnical and environmental engineering services throughout the project’s lifecycle. We performed geotechnical explorations to support the design of the building addition, conducted comprehensive environmental hazardous material (Haz-Mat) surveys, and prepared abatement specifications compliant with Drexel U and City of Philadelphia standards. We also provided oversight during abatement procedures.
During construction, our licensed Special Inspectors, certified by Philadelphia’s Department of Licenses & Inspections, conducted materials testing and special inspections to maintain quality and code compliance. This included observing and testing cast-in-place concrete, masonry, structural steel, and spray-on fireproofing.
Throughout the renovation, we collaborated closely with the Developer, Drexel University, the design team, and the Construction Manager. This collaborative approach successfully transformed Kelly Hall into a state-of-the-art living space for future generations of Drexel students.
