Bandemer Barton Trail Design

Ann Arbor, MI

Our team led the feasibility study and design of a new railroad underpass in Ann Arbor, MI, creating a safe pedestrian and bicycle crossing beneath the Michigan Line—a key high-speed passenger rail route between Detroit and Chicago. The box culvert was installed using a cut-and-cover method during a tightly controlled rail outage to minimize service disruption.

The underpass forms a critical link in the Border-to-Border Trail and the statewide Iron-Belle Trail, improving safe access through this busy corridor. A new timber bridge spans a nearby waterway, and a sheet pile retaining wall protects the trail alignment while minimizing impacts to the Huron River. Extensive coordination with MDOT Rail, Amtrak, utilities, and local partners ensured the design met high-speed rail standards and addressed safety, engineering, and community needs.
