Glass City Riverwalk
Toledo, OHMetroparks Toledo received a $23.7 million BUILD Grant to reconstruct the riverwalk in downtown Toledo. To comply with the grant terms, the project needed to be fast-tracked, and federal authorization for the $50M project had to be obtained by September 2022. Our team of professionals completed all conceptual planning and design required for the project in less than a year.
The team was responsible for not only managing the project but also designing the downtown section of the new path. We installed two specialty pavements that incorporated pigment and glass to showcase Toledo’s Glass City heritage. The pathway also included two multi-use path bridges, unique shade structures, a comfort station, trellis structures, a waterplay foundation, and various specialty lighting systems. It also included the reconstruction of a lighthouse into a play structure. In addition, our team oversaw eight sub-consultants and coordinated extensively with AT&T, First Energy, and the City of Toledo during utility relocation.
As a result of our efforts, the Glass City Riverwalk has transformed Toledo’s riverfront between the Anthony Wayne Bridge (SR2) and the Veterans’ Glass City Skyway (I-280) on both sides of the Maumee River. A contractor was hired as part of a Construction Manager at Risk (CMAR) contract and throughout the design process, we collaborated to ensure that the Riverwalk met Metropark’s goal of creating “the best Riverwalk in the country.”
