MDOT I-94 DB West Ave Elm Ave US-127 Interchange

Jackson, MI

Our firm led the reconstruction, rehabilitation and widening of I-94 from east of Airport Road to west of the Grand River and east of the Cooper Street interchange to east of Dettman Road, spanning 3.5 miles. This project included converting the I-94/US-127/M-50/West Avenue interchange into a diverging diamond interchange (DDI) to enhance traffic flow and safety. The design featured a pedestrian tunnel beneath the US-127/M-50 ramps to westbound I-94 and a pedestrian path over the Hurd-Marvin Drain, improving non-motorized connectivity. The I-94/Elm Road interchange was also reconfigured as a double roundabout to optimize traffic patterns.

This project focused on enhancing roadway operations, increasing safety and improving accessibility for pedestrians, featuring improvements from signing, pavement marking and traffic signals to operations and maintenance of traffic. In addition, we implemented drainage enhancements, such as culvert extensions, replacements and stormwater detention and retention, to address infrastructure needs and further support traffic flow and environmental goals. The project was delivered under an aggressive Design-Build schedule with intricate staging to maintain traffic flow and minimize disruptions.

One of the project’s major challenges was coordinating construction around multiple intersections and freeway to freeway ramp movements while maintaining safety for the motorists, pedestrians, and workers. Through close collaboration between us as the designer, the contractor, local stakeholders, and MDOT, the project was completed on time and within budget. Despite the demanding pace, we maintained a strong focus on safety and quality. The result was a safer, more efficient interchange for all users.
