Grassy Sound Fishing Pier Improvements Phase II

Cape May County, NJ

The Grassy Sound Fishing Pier, originally constructed in the early 1940s as a vehicular bridge, has served as a fishing pier since the early 2000s. However, after decades of exposure to the elements, it had significantly deteriorated. Our evaluation revealed widespread damage, including more than 60 piles with severe section loss and numerous broken supports, ultimately leading us to recommend a complete replacement of both the pier and the adjacent failed bulkhead to ensure long-term safety and durability.

The newly reconstructed pier features a T-shaped design with IPE decking supported by steel pipe piles with precast concrete caps and a new steel bulkhead. Improvements also include upgraded upland access, ADA accessibility and enhanced fishing amenities, all thoughtfully designed to stay within the original footprint and meet environmental and permitting requirements.

We were proud to provide a full suite of professional services throughout the project, including bathymetric/topographic survey and geotechnical engineering, waterfront engineering, structural engineering, investigations, environmental permitting, bidding support and full construction administration and inspection. The project was funded by Cape May County, who we were happy to partner with to bring this vision to life.

This project is more than a structural upgrade, it’s an investment in a treasured community space. We’re honored to help ensure it can be safely enjoyed for generations to come.
