Lafayette College Rockwell Integrated Sciences Center
Easton, PAThe project consisted of the construction of a new two- to five-story science center on the campus of Lafayette College. Demolition of existing structures was required across the area of the new structure. Our Hazardous Materials Evaluation was completed throughout these demolished structures. Unique geotechnical challenges were encountered with the need for underpinning multiple adjacent structures, the sinkhole-prone bedrock characteristics underlying the site, and settlement compatibility across variable bearing conditions and elevations. The new structure is supported via shallow foundations resting upon competent rock; however, the bedrock surface ranged from above to more than 30 feet beneath proposed foundation bearing elevations, resulting in a lean concrete mat of variable thickness beneath the foundations.
Our Construction Quality Assurance and Materials Testing services encompassed observation, review, and testing of earthworks, cast-in-place reinforced concrete (including foundations and floor slabs), structural masonry, structural steel and metal decking, fire-resistant materials/coatings, and post-construction confirmatory stormwater infiltration testing.
