Eisenhower Lock Visitor Center

Messena, NY

A new visitor center was constructed just south of the Eisenhower Lock to replace the outdated 1960s-era viewing station. Designed as a modern public-facing centerpiece for the St. Lawrence Seaway, the new facility offers sweeping canal views and provides visitors with an up-close look at ships entering and exiting the lock. The project strengthens the connection between the public and this vital infrastructure corridor.

The three-story building is conventionally steel-framed and clad in masonry, brick, and metal panels, with a distinctive standing seam roof supported by exposed trusses. Designed for year-round use, the structure includes reinforced foundations and bracing to withstand high winds, heavy snow loads, and lock-related vibrations. Inside, the Seaway has planned museum-style exhibits on the first and second floors, with balconies overlooking the lock, and amenities such as office space, a training room, and a gift shop.

Our team provided full construction inspection services, including daily activity logs and monthly progress reports. We monitored contractor compliance and scheduling, helping the Seaway stay ahead of anticipated delays. Although supply chain issues pushed final completion into January 2024, our oversight helped limit the impact and kept the project moving forward efficiently.
