Wildwood Boardwalk Rehabilitation

Wildwood, NJ

When Wildwood’s iconic boardwalk showed serious deterioration, the City faced a challenging decision. While complete replacement seemed obvious, it exceeded available funding and wasn’t necessarily the most practical approach.

Our firm evaluated the boardwalk’s structure, consisting of timber decking and superstructure on concrete piles, girders, and beams. Though initial observations suggested severely deteriorated concrete with extensive spalling and cracking, detailed inspection revealed these issues were localized, with most of the substructure remaining sound.

Based on these findings, we developed a targeted rehabilitation plan. The strategy included replacing damaged concrete sections, repairing structural spalls and cracks, and applying an elastomeric protective coating. This coating protected the structure and created a uniform appearance that should last another 90 years. After studying historical photographs, we restored the timber framing to its original orientation and topped the boardwalk with Brazilian Cumaru hardwood. The renovation also incorporated modern LED lighting.

Ultimately, this rehabilitative approach was far more cost-effective than a full replacement and also managed to preserve the boardwalk’s historic character.
