A Park Renewed for the Community
Lightning Brook Park, a 5.58-acre public space in Union, New Jersey, has been fully reimagined as a modern, inclusive, and sustainable community destination. Led by the Union County Improvement Authority, the completed project transformed an aging park once defined by an outdated parking lot, playground, and natural turf field into a vibrant, people-centered environment. The vision focused on creating a park that responds to how the community uses public space today while ensuring it remains adaptable for future needs.
Thoughtful Design for Play, Access, and Connection
The redevelopment introduced a balanced mix of active and passive amenities designed to encourage year-round use. A new multi-use synthetic turf field serves as the centerpiece, supporting a range of recreational activities. A modern restroom facility and an upgraded playground for children ages 2–5 and 5–12 provide essential infrastructure, with accessible and sensory-friendly features integrated to promote inclusive play. Additional amenities—including a spray area, basketball court, and expanded parking—broaden the park’s appeal and invite longer visits.
Pedestrian circulation was carefully considered, with concrete and paver pathways creating clear, accessible connections throughout the site. New bike racks, benches, fencing, and sports netting enhance comfort, safety, and usability, reinforcing the park’s role as a welcoming gathering place for residents of all ages.
Built for Sustainability and Long-Term Resilience
Environmental performance and durability were central to the park’s design. Green infrastructure and advanced stormwater management systems were incorporated to manage runoff and protect surrounding resources. New water, gas, and electrical utilities support field lighting, parking areas, and park facilities, ensuring reliable operation and long-term flexibility.
With construction complete, Lightning Brook Park now offers upgraded recreational opportunities within a cohesive, well-connected setting. The finished park reflects a community-focused approach to public space—one that balances accessibility, functionality, and environmental stewardship while creating a lasting asset for the residents of Union.
