Hayes Hall Renovation & Restoration

Buffalo, NY

Academic Building

The University’s vision for the School of Architecture renovation honored the building’s 19th-century heritage while adding modern amenities to foster engagement. Built in 1866, the 76,500-square-foot facility underwent a transformative restoration that preserved historic details, with approvals from the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation. Work included full reconstruction of the envelope and replacement of all windows with high-performance units meeting energy codes and preservation standards. Modern systems—HVAC, fire protection, power, and communications—were integrated to enhance comfort and function without compromising character. This approach allowed the building to meet today’s needs while preserving its legacy. The project earned the 2016 AIA Rochester Design Award, 2016 Brick by Brick Award, 2016 AS&U Outstanding Design Award, and 2019 IIDA NY Historic Restoration Award.
