Washington Road Realignment & Roundabout: Advancing Mobility at a Key Transit Hub
At the intersection of Washington Road and Princeton Hightstown Road, daily traffic converges from surrounding neighborhoods, local businesses, and commuters accessing the Princeton Junction Train Station. As development increased along the corridor, including the nearby Avalon W Squared community, the existing stop-controlled intersection could no longer safely or efficiently support the growing demand. The project created an opportunity to improve how people move through the area while making the intersection safer and more intuitive for all users.
Our team partnered with stakeholders to re-envision this key junction, transforming it into a modern roundabout that improves traffic flow while enhancing safety for motorists, pedestrians, and cyclists. The project included the realignment of County Route 571 to establish a clearer, more efficient through movement, replacing the outdated T-intersection with a configuration better suited to current and future conditions.
Designing for Safety, Efficiency, and Multimodal Access
A comprehensive traffic analysis informed the design, ensuring that proposed improvements addressed both existing conditions and projected demand. The resulting design integrates a three-point roundabout with geometric roadway enhancements, a channelized right-turn lane, and dedicated bicycle and pedestrian accommodations. These improvements reduce conflict points, calm traffic, and create safer, more intuitive movements through the intersection.
Supporting infrastructure was carefully coordinated to reinforce long-term performance. Gravity retaining walls, underground stormwater detention systems, and roadway drainage improvements were incorporated to address site constraints while maintaining reliability and resilience. Throughout design and construction, our team worked closely with regulatory agencies and project partners to align transportation improvements with the broader redevelopment effort.
Completed in spring 2025, the project delivers a safer, more efficient gateway to the Princeton Junction Train Station and surrounding community. By modernizing a critical intersection and improving connectivity for all users, the project supports continued growth while enhancing the daily experience of those who live, work, and travel through the corridor.
